The Winter Dry Skin Squad

The Winter Dry Skin Squad

Hiya!

Winter can be a magical season. Think peaceful snow falling, ice-skating, delicious hot broths with crusty bread, cozy crackling fires in the fireplace, the aroma of creamy hot spicy chai or chocolate...

Unfortunately, your skin is not a fan of winter. Winter dry skin is mostly caused by cold temperature, low humidity, and use of central heating. But worry not! We've got you covered with a selection of deeply moisturizing soaps, lotions, salves & heel butters that will leave your skin hydrated, nourished, soft & happy.

Our Winter Dry Skin collection includes honey soaps, soaps with shea butter and sea buckthorn oil, Argan oil, goat's milk, and scented with healing essential oils of myrrh, frankincense, lavender, clove, patchouli, geranium, juniper berry, sweet orange and amyris sandalwood.

Butter My Heels will leave your heels soft and healthy, and keep them from drying, chapping and splitting.

The Mother of All Healing Salves has hemp and beeswax and healing, soothing and reparative herbs for dry and chapped skin.

Wild Carrot Herbal's Lord! My hands are so dry! lotion will keep your hands deeply moisturized and velvety-soft.

You can find all of these products in our Winter Dry Skin collection.

Stay warm, and treat your skin with lots of TLC!

Yours truly,

The Camamu Team: S + A + J + K

Summer Sale!

Summer Sale!

Happy solstice friends!

We hope these long days find you happy, healthy and enjoying the bounty and bliss of summer days. Friends, hammocks, good books, bike rides... perhaps a long cool shower and a scrumptious bar of Camamu soap to round out the picture!

We are putting some of our favorite soaps on sale starting today; Cocoa Rose, Argan Gotu Kola and Orang-U-Glad have all been reduced to $4 per bar.

The Cocoa Rose Soap is wondrously moisturizing with its cocoa butter and sensual essential blend of Brazilian rose, balsam peru, myrrh and amyris sandalwood; deep mysteries abound!

The Argan Gotu Kola Soap is one of my favorites. Gotu kola, Centella asiatica, is a revered, spiritual plant which has been used in India for everything from improving mediation to healing leprosy. In terms of skin care it helps to rebuild and support collagen, prevents infection, reduces scarring and stimulates the circulation. Argan oil also provides profound skin benefits; rich in essential fatty acids and anti-oxidants, it boosts the skin's elasticity, protects against premature aging and regulates the production of sebum. Scented with lavender, balsam peru, myrrh and canaga essential oils, we hope you'll give this rejuvenating soap a try.

Orang-U-Glad is one of our palm oil free soaps. Cocoa butter, hemp seed oil and shea butter replace the palm oil to create a deeply moisturizing, vitamin and essential fatty acid-rich soap. Orang-U-Glad is tangily scented with sweet orange, balsam peru and patchouli essential oils. Well, we're never 100% right but we do think this soap will make you glad!

Take advantage of this sale to try out three of Camamu's favorites. Sale lasts while supplies last.

Happy summer!

Grey days, crows and love.

Grey days, crows and love.

We're having a typical Portland winter again, rainy and grey. Every morning the enormous black walnut tree that covers most of my block is crowded with crows that announce the pink streaked sky and the start of another day. Today is half-way between winter and spring and already the hellebores are pushing up while the glossy camellias burst into rosy bloom.

As ever, this time of year we celebrate the resurfacing, the renewal, the growth that this season teases at. And, as ever, we hope this time of year finds you all in love. With yourself, with your world, with another living creature. If you're looking for a gift to share, a gift that is made with love, a gift that speaks of love, we hope you'll enjoy our heart soaps. Our Molten Love Heart Soap is new this year. Scented with an earthy, spell-binding essential and botanical oil combination of rose, vetiver and jasmine, it is swirled with activated charcoal for removing the old and unwanted, leaving room for the new. Our Unrepentant Rose Heart Soap, sprinkled with red rose petals and scented with rose, geranium and palmarosa essential oils, is beautiful, yearningly beautiful. Both come packaged in kraft boxes that feature original artwork on the front.

Have fun, have love, have patience. Spring is on its way!

Leaves and mist.

After a long, hot summer, Portland has finally, reluctantly, moved into autumn. Leaves are turning color, chanterelles heap in baskets at the farmers markets, daylight ebbs and at Camamu we have begun to make soaps that are extra moisturizing and scented with warming, cozying essential oil blends. Loaded with shea butter, we have two new chunk soaps, Such a Pretty Soap and Shea & Spice Soap. Don't wait to treat yourself and your skin!

We also just received a shipment of pestemal towels from Istanbul. 100% cotton, 50% linen/50% cotton and 20% bamboo/80% cotton blends, these towels are vibrantly colorful, capacious and, because they are light, wash and dry without consuming as much power as regular terry cloth towels. Bonus? They don't mildew! Needless to say, they make unique gifts and pair effortlessly with our soaps and shampoos. If you're in Portland, come in to our studio to touch and see for yourself.

Camamu hopes that you are all enjoying the settling in that fall brings. We send you our thanks and very best wishes!

Hmmm.... how the days do fly!

It's been too long between posts and that's just not right! So here's a quick catch-up to let you know about the two new products that got put up on our website today. One is our Bloom Heart Soap, a lovely seasonal beauty that subtly urges you to do what the natural world is doing and bloom your best self. Scented with sweet orange, cananga and jasmine, this heart is available in a hand-stamped kraft box and makes a great present for weddings, showers, birthdays and whatever else is there to celebrate.

We also, finally and belatedly, have added our Unrepentant Rose Oil to the website. Available only online, in our studio or at the Portland Rose Garden, this stunning oil is a mixture of apricot kernel oil, rosehip seed oil and our Brazilian rose essential oil. Richly moisturizing and nourishing, this oil is also useful for reducing scar tissue while its aromatherapeutic benefits run the gamut from grounding to opening the heart chakra to easing stress and depression. Available in lovely cobalt blue one ounce bottles, you won't be sorry you have this little gem close at hand.

Neem 'Arista' - Perfect, complete and imperishable

Years ago I was asked by one of my buyers to develop a neem oil bar shampoo for use against head lice. I had seen neem products in stores but had never done any reading about it.  What an amazing world opened up when I did!

The neem tree, Azadirachta indica, grows in tropical and sub-tropical areas and is native to India and the Indian subcontinent. It is considered to be a veritable pharmacy by Ayuverdic and Sidha practitioners who have used the leaf, twig, bark, root, fruits and seeds of this tree for over 4,000 years. Its name in sanskrit is 'sarva roga nivarini' which means 'the curer of all ailments' and indeed, the benefits and therapeutics of this tree are vast.

Neem oil, derived from the fruit and seed, is anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-viral. In skin, hair and scalp care, it is useful against dry skin, acne, head lice and dandruff while helping to promote hair growth and luster; anti-inflammatory, it is useful against eczema and psoriasis. Because of its anti-fungal properties, it is used for cases of athlete's foot, ringworm and toe fungus. High in fatty acids, Vitamin E, anti-oxidants and carotenoids, it is useful in nourishing stressed and aging skin.

We combine neem leaf powder with the oil in all of our Neem products. Neem leaf shares many of the same properties as the oil. It helps to clear acne, blackheads and is anti-microbial. In shampoos, it clears dandruff and soothes dry scalps.

We love receiving letters from satisfied customers. Here is one from a user of our Neem Sacred Tree Soap.

"Regarding your products, I want to express my sincere appreciation for your Neem Oil soap. It has made such a difference for me. For years I have struggled with chronic problems with the skin and nails on my hands and feet. My feet had issues with dryness, cracking, peeling, and hyper-keratinization (painful calluses on the ball of my foot). I also had issues with dryness on my hands, and deformation and separation of fingernails from the bed. I tried numerous products, including antifungals and corticoid steroids, but found nothing that really worked. I’ve seen a number of dermatologists, also to no avail. I happened on your Neem Oil soap at Central Market in Shoreline, WA and thought I’d give it a try. The difference it has made over a period of several months is dramatic. All the problems I was having with my feet and hands have been resolved. It is nothing short of amazing. I just keep using your product every day and everything has returned to normal. I am grateful!  Thank you, thank you, thank you!"

For gentle healing, nourishment and repair, Camamu lovingly makes Neem Sacred Tree Soap, Neem Yarrow Soap, our amazing Neem Oil Shampoo and pots of Neem Chaparral Salve. Enjoy!

Half way.

Two days ago we were mid-point between the beginning of winter and the start of spring. The season has been mild here in Portland and our eyes are already bedazzled with bursts of bright yellow from daffodils while drifts of scent from budding daphne begin to tantalize. We wake to the glass voices of finches at the feeders and the clucks and whistles of ruby throated hummingbirds. Amidst all the asphalt and concrete of this city, the natural world never fails to amaze.

The past few days find Camamu having a very short lull after the holidays and a busy January.  Re-stocking our shelves, planning new soaps, catching up on blogging (!) all feel wonderful. Valentine's Day is just around the corner and we have lots and lots of Unrepentant Rose Heart soaps on hand. These beauties are scented with Brazilian rose, geranium and palmarosa essential oils, have organic rose petals sprinkled on top and are hand-cut, ever so lovingly, with cookie cutters. They're available either unpackaged or else placed into kraft boxes that have been hand-stamped with art work done by the oh so talented Catherine Rondthaler. The only trouble with the hearts is that they're so beautiful our customers have been loathe to use them. Never fear though, there's always more at Camamu!
